La Cala and the coast

Last updated:

The Mijas coastline stretches between the boundaries with Fuengirola and Marbella, taking in Calaburra, El Chaparral, La Cala, Riviera del Sol and Calahonda. It holds all five Mijas beaches awarded the Blue Flag in 2026, a coastal trail along much of the shore, and La Cala, with its historic watchtower and its village centre by the sea.

In idealista’s districts the area covers Calaburra - Chaparral, La Cala de Mijas, Riviera del Sol and Sitio de Calahonda. “Coastal” describes the area, not every address: many homes sit on the slopes behind the shore.

The beaches and the coastal trail

The five Blue Flag beaches of 2026 are La Cala, El Chaparral, El Bombo, Riviera and La Luna - Royal Beach (Ayuntamiento de Mijas (opens in a new tab), July 2026). For coastal walks, ADEAC lists a six-kilometre trail between La Cala and Playa de La Luna (ADEAC (opens in a new tab)), and a 700-metre section linking La Cala with El Sheriff opened in June 2026 (Turismo Mijas (opens in a new tab)). In July 2026 the town hall also reported Q de Calidad and S de Sostenibilidad certification for nine Mijas beaches.

La Cala de Mijas

La Cala’s watchtower, the Torre de la Batería de Cala del Moral, stands by the seafront (Ayuntamiento de Mijas (opens in a new tab)). La Cala’s market takes place at the fairground on Wednesdays and Saturdays, from about 9am to 2pm, and an organic market on Bulevar de La Cala on the second and last Sunday of each month (Turismo Mijas (opens in a new tab)).

August 2026 asking-price data from idealista (Mijas (opens in a new tab) and its district pages). Annual changes describe its advertised-price index, not the change in value of an individual home. The floor areas are budget comparisons before purchase costs and taxes.

La Cala de Mijas had the highest of the eleven district figures in August 2026, still about 23% below Marbella’s municipal figure; Riviera del Sol and Calahonda ask close to the municipal average. Advertisements checked in October 2026 stated community fees of €183 per month for an apartment in La Cala de Mijas and €131 per month in Riviera del Sol (listing (opens in a new tab); listing (opens in a new tab)). These are individual advertised examples, not area averages.

New builds

On 6 October 2026, idealista’s Spanish-language search displayed 16 new-development advertisements in Calaburra - Chaparral, 7 in La Cala de Mijas and 5 in Riviera del Sol (idealista (opens in a new tab)); these are advertising counts, not distinct projects or homes. As an example, Metrovacesa advertised homes at Almare, in La Cala de Mijas, from €496,000 plus VAT (Metrovacesa (opens in a new tab), 6 October 2026). Before paying anything off-plan, have your own lawyer check the building licence, the designated account and the guarantee or insurance issued in your name.

Living there all year

Health care. The La Cala de Mijas health centre, on Avenida Sierra de las Nieves, is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm (SAS (opens in a new tab)).

Schools. IES La Cala de Mijas and CEP El Chaparral, in Urbanización El Limonar, are listed in the Junta de Andalucía’s 2024/25 register of English bilingual schools (Junta de Andalucía (opens in a new tab)). See Schools and family.

Buses. The M-119 circular links Calahonda, La Cala and Fuengirola, and the M-220 runs along the coast between Las Lagunas, Fuengirola and Marbella, with stops at El Faro de Calaburra, El Chaparral, La Cala, Miraflores and Calahonda (Consorcio de Transportes Metropolitano del Área de Málaga (opens in a new tab)). Málaga airport is around 25 minutes by road from La Cala (Rome2Rio, October 2026).

Before you buy near the shore

Spain’s Coastal Law generally establishes a 100-metre protection strip inland from the legally defined inner limit of the seashore, subject to transitional provisions and exceptions (Ley de Costas (opens in a new tab), article 23). Published coastal-boundary decisions cover sections of the Mijas shoreline, including the stretch from the Marbella boundary to Arroyo de la Lucera and the section between El Chaparral and the Fuengirola boundary (BOE, 2009 (opens in a new tab); BOE, 2013 (opens in a new tab)), and regional flood-risk documentation identifies stretches of Arroyo Cala del Moral, Arroyo Moros and Río Fuengirola (Junta de Andalucía (opens in a new tab), September 2024). Ask your lawyer to check the coastal boundaries and restrictions for the specific property, and check flood risk on the official flood maps (SNCZI).

If you plan to let the property

Since 3 April 2025, a new holiday let covered by Spain’s Horizontal Property Law generally requires prior express approval from the owners’ association. Have an independent adviser check the property’s planning compatibility, tourism requirements, community rules and any applicable transitional provisions before relying on rental income.

Who La Cala and the coast suit

The coast suits buyers who want Blue Flag beaches and a coastal trail close by, from the village centre of La Cala to the residential neighbourhoods of Riviera del Sol and Calahonda, with Fuengirola and Marbella along the same road.

For an urban setting with everyday services, explore Las Lagunas; for the lowest published district asking-price figure in August 2026, consider Campo de Mijas. For a home near the fairways, explore the golf and inland communities.
